Pope Francis Establishes ‘Word of God’ Sunday (January 26, Third Sunday in Ordinary Time)

Pope Francis Establishes Word of God Sunday

On the Feast of St. Jerome this past fall, Pope Francis dedicated the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time as Word of God Sunday. The first celebration of this annual day will be on January 26, 2020.

In his decree, “Aperuit Illis,” the Holy Father said,

“The relationship between the Risen Lord, the community of believers and sacred Scripture is essential to our identity as Christians…The Bible is the book of the Lord’s people, who, in listening to it, move from dispersion and division towards unity.”

Pope Francis suggested that on ‘Word of God’ Sunday, the sacred text be enthroned “in order to focus the attention of the assembly on the normative value of God’s Word.” Pastors are invited to preach on the importance of the Word and to encourage the faithful to read the Bible as a regular part of their daily lives. Liturgists and pastoral musicians would do well to plan music that will support this emphasis.

OCP is pleased to present a playlist with songs from across our repertoire that celebrate the Word of God.
